Andy Schutz (Bloomsburg) named EWL Wrestler of the Week

Redshirt senior Andy Schutz (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area/Seton Hill) of Bloomsburg has been named the EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ending November 19th. He started his week off with a victory on Thursday night, November 16th with a 4-0 win over Garrett Pepple of Indiana in the 133-pound match during their home dual meet, helping Bloomsburg nearly knock off the Hoosiers, as they fell only 19-18. He then won the 133-pound bracket of the Black Knight Invitational on Sunday at Army West Point in West Point, NY, beating Lane Peters of Army West Point 8-3 in the quarterfinals, Alex Mackall of Rutgers 12-9 in the semifinals, and then, in the final, beating 2017 National Qualifier DJ Fehlman of Lock Haven 9-2. With those four wins, Schutz ran his record to 10-2 for this season so far. This follows a 10-3 record against collegiate competition in 2016-17 while competing unattached (13-6 overall), and he had previously gone 19-17 in 2015-16, 15-18 in 2014-15, and, while competing for Seton Hill in 2013-14, he had a 24-11 record.

Chance Marsteller (Lock Haven) named EWL Wrestler of the Week

Redshirt junior Chance Marsteller (New Park, PA/Kennard-Dale HS/Oklahoma State) of Lock Haven has been named the EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ending November 12th. He won his bracket of the Journeymen Collegiate Classic at 165 pounds, beating Drew Longo (Lehigh) by 8-3 decision, Michael Eckhart (American) by fall in 1:09, and Cole Walter (Lehigh) by 8-1 decision. Marsteller came into the week ranked #10 in the nation at 165 pounds by FloWrestling, #11 by InterMat, and #15 by The Open Mat. With his three victories this weekend, he is now 8-0 this season, having also won the Clarion Open at 165 pounds last weekend. Marsteller did not compete last season, however, he did go 6-5 in 2015-16 while wrestling for Oklahoma State, and 14-4 in 2014-15 while wrestling unattached.

Alex Klucker (Lock Haven) named EWL Wrestler of the Week

Redshirt sophomore Alex Klucker (Summerdale, PA/East Pennsboro HS) of Lock Haven has been named the EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ending November 5th. He opened up his season by winning the Clarion Open at 157 pounds, beating Logan Witwicki (unattached from Pitt-Johnstown) by fall in 29 seconds, Richard Jackson (unattached from Kent State) by 16-0 technical fall in 3:59, Cameron Coy (unattached from Virginia) by 15-11 decision, Joe Lee (unattached and unrostered) by 19-8 major decision, and, in the finals, 2017 NCAA Qualifier Casey Sparkman (unattached from Kent State) by fall in 2:23 while otherwise already having the technical fall wrapped up. This was Klucker’s first official action of his career, although he did go 15-15 as a true freshman in 2015-16 while redshirting.

EWL Preseason Coaches’ Poll Results

EDINBORO, PA – Led by two-time NCAA Division I All-American Chad Walsh and defending EWL Champion BJ Clagon, as well as having all ten of their wrestlers predicted by the coaches to finish in the top four, Rider is predicted to be the 2017-18 EWL Champions, on both a dual and tournament basis. Clagon and Walsh are also picked to be champions at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively. They are followed by Edinboro, led by 2017 All-American Sean Russell, who is picked to win the EWL Championship at 125 pounds for the third time in his career.
