JR Wert (Rider) named EWL Wrestler of the Week

Redshirt Senior JR Wert (Christiansburg, VA/Christiansburg) of Rider has been named the EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ending December 31st. Wert went 4-0 at the South Beach Duals in Deerfield Beach, Florida, with an 18-0 technical fall victory over Hunter Dusold of Columbia and a 9-2 decision win over Paul Bianchi of North Dakota State on Friday, and then followed that up with a 6-4 decision upset of nationally-ranked Barlow McGhee of Missouri and an 18-2 technical fall victory over Michael Simonetti of Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. These four victories puts Wert’s record at 9-1 on the season, including a perfect 6-0 in duals. In previous seasons, Wert had gone 15-8 in 2016-17, 14-14 in 2014-15, and 10-3 while wrestling unattached and redshirting in 2013-14 as a true freshman.

Greg Bulsak (Clarion) named EWL Wrestler of the Week

Redshirt Freshman Greg Bulsak (South Park, PA/South Park) of Clarion has been named the EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ending December 17th. On Saturday, Bulsak picked up a win by fall in 2:52 over Gregg Harvey of Pittsburgh at the 184-pound weight class, helping Clarion pick up a road victory at Pittsburgh, 24-20. With the win, Bulsak picked up his fourth fall of the season, and ran his record to 7-2 on the season, including a perfect 2-0 in duals. Previously, Bulsak had a 17-4 record in 2016-17 while wrestling unattached.

Sean Russell (Edinboro) named EWL Wrestler of the Week

Redshirt junior Sean Russell (Lawrenceville, GA/Collins Hill) of Edinboro has been named the EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ending December 10th. Russell won his third-straight PSAC Championship on Saturday, with a 25-10 technical fall victory in 5:58 over Aaron Wildonger of Millersville in the quarterfinals, a fall in 6:01 over Josiah Kline of Lock Haven in the semifinals, and a 19-8 major decision victory over 2017 NCAA Division II All-American Alan Diltz of Seton Hill in the championship match. With these victories, Russell ran his record to 13-2 on the season. Prior to this season, Russell was an EWL Champion and an NCAA Division I All-American in 2017, finishing seventh at 125 pounds in St. Louis, Missouri, and earning a record of 37-8 on the season. Russell also was an EWL Champion in 2015-16, with a record of 28-9, and went 18-8 in 2014-15 while redshirting and competing unattached.

Chad Walsh (Rider) named EWL Wrestler of the Week

Redshirt senior Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) of Rider has been named the EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ending December 3rd. Walsh beat May Bethea of Penn by a 5-1 decision in their dual meet Friday night, helping Rider beat the Quakers 19-15 at the Palestra in Philadelphia. With the win, Walsh runs his official record to 8-0 on the season, and he also owns a victory at the NWCA All-Star Classic, which is not counted in his official record. A two-time All-American, Walsh finished 7th at the 2017 NCAA Championships and had a final 2016-17 record of 33-4, and also was 5th at the 2016 NCAA Championships, ending the 2015-16 season with a record of 28-9. Going back further, Walsh had a 30-10 record as a freshman in 2014-15, and, while wrestling unattached in 2013-14, had a record of 33-7.
