Chance Marsteller (Lock Haven) named EWL Wrestler of the Week

For the third time this season, redshirt junior Chance Marsteller (New Park, PA/Kennard-Dale HS/Oklahoma State) of Lock Haven has been named the EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ending January 28th. Marsteller, wrestling at 165 pounds, opened up his weekend on Saturday with an 8-4 decision victory over previously-unbeaten Chad Walsh of Rider, and then followed that up on Sunday with a 20-4 technical fall victory over Max Elling of Columbia. These two victories moved Marsteller’s record to 32-1 on the season, including 12-0 in dual meets, and he’s ranked #6 nationally by Intermat, #6 by The Open Mat, #10 by FloWrestling, and #10 by WIN Magazine. Marsteller did not compete last season, however, he did go 6-5 in 2015-16 while wrestling for Oklahoma State, and 14-4 in 2014-15 while wrestling unattached.

Dean Sherry (Rider) named EWL Wrestler of the Week

Junior Dean Sherry (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) of Rider has been named EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ending January 21st. Dean Sherry, wrestling at 174 pounds, opened up his weekend on Friday with a 9-5 decision victory over Gabe Stark of Cleveland State, and then followed that up on Sunday with a 21-12 major decision over (per FloWrestling) 20th-ranked Ty Schoffstall of Edinboro, helping his Broncs snap Edinboro’s 24-dual EWL wining streak. These two victories moved Sherry’s record to 12-6 on the season, including 8-2 in dual meets. Previously, Sherry had gone 19-5 in 2016-17.

Ibrahim Bunduka (George Mason) named EWL Wrestler of the Week

Redshirt senior Ibrahim Bunduka (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) of George Mason has been named the EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ending January 14th. Bunduka opened the weekend on Friday with a 16-0 technical fall victory in 2:42 over Michael McClelland of Davidson, helping his Patriots win 29-9 in their home dual meet. Saturday, Bunduka upset nationally-ranked J.R. Wert of Rider, 4-3, in George Mason’s dual meet with the Broncs. With these two victories, Bunduka moved to 17-7 on the season. Previously, Bunduka had gone 22-5 and was an NCAA qualifier in 2016-17, 20-17 in 2015-16, 6-18 in 2014-15, and 18-16 in 2013-14 while wrestling unattached.

Chance Marsteller (Lock Haven) named EWL Wrestler of the Week

For the second time this season, redshirt junior Chance Marsteller (New Park, PA/Kennard-Dale HS/Oklahoma State) of Lock Haven has been named the EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ending January 7th. Marsteller finished third at 165 pounds at the prestigious Southern Scuffle, held in Chattanooga, Tennessee on January 1st and 2nd. Marsteller opened the tournament with a 16-5 major decision victory over Tyler Wiederholt of Air Force, then won by fall in 3:52 over Neal Richards (Unattached from VMI), and picked up a 3-1 decision over Mekhi Lewis (Unattached from Virginia Tech) in the quarterfinals on January 1st. On January 2nd, Marsteller fell 3-2 to Bryce Steiert (unattached from Northern Iowa), but rebounded to beat Ebed Jarrell of Drexel 10-5 in the consolation semifinals, and then picked up his second victory of the tournament over Mekhi Lewis, this time by 6-4 decision in the third-place match. Marsteller came into the week ranked #7 in the nation at 165 pounds by InterMat, #8 by The Open Mat, and #11 by FloWrestling. With his 5-1 this week, he is now 24-1 this season. Marsteller did not compete last season, however, he did go 6-5 in 2015-16 while wrestling for Oklahoma State, and 14-4 in 2014-15 while wrestling unattached.
